International Symposium

Teaching Languages for Specific and Academic Purposes in Higher Education:

English-Deutsch-Italiano

29 June 2018
hosted by the Language Centre of the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano (Italy)

The internationalization of higher education has given rise to multilingual and multicultural universities throughout Europe and around the world. The shift toward multilingual and plurilingual education presents both new opportunities and new challenges. These trends especially give new prominence to the role of language teaching and learning within higher education—in particular to the role of teaching and learning Languages for Specific and Academic Purposes.

Building upon the success of a series of four symposia on Teaching English for Specific and Academic Purposes—which were co-organized by TESOL Italy and the Faculty of Economics and Management at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano (unibz)—the Language Centre at unibz is pleased to announce an international symposium which will expand the discourse to Didaktik der Fachsprachen – DaF/DaZ and Didattica dei linguaggi specialistici – Italiano L2/LS.

Unibz is widely recognized as the first trilingual university in Europe, with English, German, and Italian serving as the mediums of instruction in most degree programs. The city of Bozen-Bolzano is located in the trilingual Province of South Tyrol, a border region where German, Italian, and Ladin enjoy equal status as de jure official languages in local government, public administration, and education. This makes unibz an ideal setting for sharing and exploring current trends in LSP and LAP across linguistic, institutional, and national boundaries.

Specifically, the symposium aims to bring together university instructors and researchers of LSP and LAP in order to share and explore approaches, methods, and practices which have emerged within diverse contexts. Presenters are invited to submit proposals for 20-minute talks on any of the following—and similar—themes of direct relevance to teaching, learning, and assessing English, German, or Italian for specific and academic purposes in higher education contexts:

– The development of teaching/learning material for LSP/LAP;

– The development of LSP/LAP syllabi and courses;

– Developing learning strategies for LSP/LAP;

– Best practice in teaching and/or assessing LSP/LAP;

– Second language acquisition in LSP/LAP contexts;

– The role of the teaching/learning of LSP/LAP in higher education.

Accepted talks will have a clear theoretical framework and be supported with empirical evidence, but will have a practical focus where application for teaching and learning LSP/LAP is evident.
Please submit abstracts of no more than 200 words and a brief bio of no more than 50 words in English, German, or Italian by 31 March 2018 to: English: MichaelJoseph.Ennis@unibz.it / German: Dietmar.Unterkofler@unibz.it / Italian: Elena.Bonetto@unibz.it Steering committee: Elena Bonetto, Cristina Boscolo, Michael Joseph Ennis, Daniel Gallo, Sandra Montali, Dietmar Unterkofler, Oscar Vallazza.
